What is mold?

Mold is a form of fungi with around 100,000 different species. Most fungi, including molds, produce microscopic cells called “spores” that spread readily through the air. Airborne spores are easily inhaled and can be very hazardous to our health.  Like seeds, live spores form colonies with the right conditions. They multiply in their colonies rapidly and if not stopped completely can take over an area very quickly.

Molds come in a variety of colors and textures and can be found all year long, indoors and out. Most molds strive in damp, warm, and humid conditions. Often molds are not harmful and are needed for the ecosystem. There are also very harmful molds that can cause a variety of health issues and/or structural damages.

Some outdoor molds live in the soil, on plants, or dead or decaying matter. They also survive very well in marina areas on ropes, canvas, boats, and in any environment that can sustain it. Indoor molds are often found, but not limited to, bathrooms, basements, attics, closets, and any room with materials that have been exposed to moisture, water damage, or have poor air flow. Some of the more common indoor molds are Cladosporium, Penicillium, Alternaria, and Aspergillus.

If mold is observed, it is best to get rid of it at once so it does not multiply to other areas.
