Mold in the home

BEFORE MOLD*OFF

AFTER MOLD*OFF

One of the largest investments many of us will make in our lifetime is our home. We put a great deal of money and time into our homes upkeep and maintenance. The last thing we want is for a microorganism to take over and destroy all the work we have done.

Mold can start to grow on a surface within twenty four to forty eight hours after being exposed to moisture. Mold needs moisture to grow, but don’t think you are safe if you live in a dry environment, it doesn’t take much. Molds reproduce by spores - microscopic seeds that use the air to transport from one area to the other. Molds digest organic material and they will in time destroy the material it is exposed to. Due to the fact that spores are airborne, we can have an array of health problems from the air we breathe. Many times people go months with headaches, asthma type symptoms, rashes, and a variety of other ailments with no explanation. And when they find and get rid of mold in the home they become symptom free.

There are many reasons for excess water in a home. Flooding can occur in any geographical location, your sewage can back up due to a variety of reasons, your roof and or pluming may leak, you may have a damp basement or crawl space, tubs and sinks may overflow or leak, old windows can start to leak moisture, and you may even have excess moisture due to steam in the kitchen or humidifiers. Wherever the moisture is coming from, it must be found and corrected as soon as possible to prevent the forming or spreading of mold. Sometimes moisture can collect in a ceiling or basement for a long period of time before it is found. The longer you have mold growing the harder it is to get rid of and the more your body will be exposed to it.

Mold feeds off organic material such as dirt, drywall, wood, food, soil, paper, carpet, padding, and much more. Because most surfaces can have a layer of dirt or grime on them mold can grow on almost any surface in your home including stainless steel and some surfaces that claim to be mold resistant.

Mold can be hidden in your home and very hard to find. Many times when mold is present there is a distinct musty odor. If you have had any water damage in an area and it smells musty and you can not visibly see mold it may be hidden. Some of the common places mold can hide can be on the back side of drywall, wallpaper or paneling, the inside of ceiling tiles, underneath your flooring, around pipes in your walls, and even in your ceiling due to a roof leaking. It is important to first do a physical inspection in your entire home by using a flashlight and looking at all the surfaces in our home including underneath furniture, inside cabinets and closets, in your utility rooms and your attic.
