 One of American’s most favorite past times is boating and for some it is even a lifestyle. Boats come in all different sizes and price ranges, from a small aluminum boat to a yacht. No matter what your boat size you more than likely will at some point have to deal with mold. The warm wet conditions that surround boating are ideal for mold spores to multiply at a very fast rate.
Mold can grow on virtually any surface. Even surfaces that say they are resistant to mold may grow mold due to the fact that it can survive on a thin film of dirt or other organic material. This can happen any season whether the boat is in the water or dry docked for the winter months. Mold, if not dealt with, can cause massive damage that can be irreversible.
The reason mold grows so readily on boats is due to the moisture content in the air and on the surfaces. When you have warm temperatures that are mixed with moisture it makes condensation. Condensation in turn drips on to the interior of the boat making for a prime breeding ground for mold spores to multiply. Even when you remove a boat from the water it is very susceptible to mold growth, even more so due to the lack of fresh air movement on the surface and in the cabin.
A boats relative humidity should be in the range of 30 to 50% according to the EPA. How to achieve this is explained further in the prevention section.
When mold starts to form it multiplies rapidly. As it multiplies it moves further in the surfaces it has formed on. Especially in dark closed cabinets and in vinyl, cloth, headliners, leather, even fiberglass and stainless steel. The only way to get rid of mold is to clean it properly, or if the surface is too damaged, remove the affected area and take steps to effectively prevent mold from forming in the future.
